Slam

I was watching some def jam on youtube and I felt inspired....so I wrote a poem on some of the feelings I encountered while doing research for my thesis on sex trafficking...amazing how creativity just flows from the most unexpected places. After months of writing with an academic view, I couldn't contain myself anymore. I can't write objectively about such an henious crime against women and children.
Billions of people trafficked world wide. 20,000 women and children trafficked into the United States EACH YEAR.

How can you help?
Support your local, or national shelters and NGOs

Also, just talk about it. Too many people don't even know what is going on. Ignoring the problem does not make it go away.

I Slam

I slam for those girls who have no words
Who have no family
Who have no friends
Who have no hope
Who have no truth- to see who we can be

They are blinded by the politicians that play the game
In hopes that they will please their right wing constituents
Who are more concerned with their pocket books
Than human lives
For human lives do not matter- unless they are American lives

But it's American Men who lay on top of them
It's the men with popped collars
That pay with American dollars
Who lust at night and condemn at day

I slam for human lives stolen by greed
Making money by feeding the need
For Flesh
For Youth
For Innocence

I slam for that little girl behind that short skirt
And fishnet stockings
Who stares into his eyes,

As he chuckles to his friends, "watch while I bang her"
I slam his ass down with my words and my anger!

No longer will he occupy her small, little body
And hide behind the laws of this country

I slam so that they can see
Who we can be

And we can be-
Someone who leads them to a bed
Not for sex, but for sleep
Someone who clothes them
Not for streets, but for school

Someone who reads for them,
Breaths for them,
Leads for them
Stands up and SCREAMS for them!

I slam
For them

Shanelle Gabriel - Why I Love You

(The Reasons) Why I Love You

They say the human body

Has over 50 billion white blood cells…

And I need every single one

Because you

Make me…

Sick.

You are the fish that I would

Throw back

But for some reason

As opposites,

We attract!

We show our admiration in love taps,

"I Hate You!" matches,

And sarcastic wise cracks.

All the qualities of my soulmate…

You lack.

I wrote you a poem once.

I mounted and framed it.

It was perfect,

And you gave me a pat on the back

And said,

"Hey, good stuff…"

That was it.

You attempts at being romantic

Are simply pathetic.

The last massage you gave me

Required a paramedic.

The first time you cooked me dinner

I had to pump my stomach.

And you just like picking fights.

If I say go left,

You go right.

If I say it's day,

You swear it's night.

You still think our anniversary

Is the 10th of May;

It's the 9th

Of MARCH!

The Golden Arches

Is the closest thing to jewelry

I've ever seen from you.

For my last birthday,

You gave me a Twinkie

With one candle.

You wear socks with your sandals!

And not the short ones,

The ones that pass your ankles.

My idea of a tranquil evening,

Involves a good book

And peppermint tea.

Yours only requires your PSP.

You're a die hard Nas fan;

I like Jay-Z.

Like most Black folk and lactose products

We just always seem to disagree.

You think Angelina Jolie

Is the epitome of beauty.

I think she's overrated and her lips are crusty.

You like chicks that are busty,

And I'm a proud member

Of the Itty-Bitty Titty Committee.

Now, I'm a country kind of gal;

You like the city life.

I'm a revolutionary woman;

You think we should all be barefoot housewives.

I remember the last time I cried…

You gently

Wiped my eyes,

And whispered in my ears,

"Baby…

Suck it up."

And I know it's bugged,

But I still love you,

Like Whitney loves crack.

Cause for some reason as opposites,

We attract.

And truth be told,

That romantic crap usually doesn't last.

Flowers die,

And many diamonds given

May as well be cut glass,

But what matters most is that

You complement me

Like air through my lungs.

And there are over a trillion nerves

In the central nervous system…

You get on every single one.

You know you do…

But for some reason,

That's why I love you.

A Chief Hindrance to Human Improvement

For everyone who desires power, desires it most over those how are nearest to him, with whom his life is passes, with whom he has most concerns in common, and in whom any independence of his authority is oftenest likely to interfere with his individual preferences.

A Pair of Boots. Vincent Van Gogh.

Kierkegaard said that art is essential to seeing the earth's beauty. Art can take an ordinary pair of boots, something that we would never take a second look at, and turn it into something significant-as it should be. When we look at those boots in a painting we see the hardships they have been through and we think of the life of the man who wears those boots- it's the reflection that comes with the appreciation of art that is so important. When we see art, we take the time to ponder its significance- too bad Kierkegaard was a Nazi, he would have otherwise made a half decent philosopher.

My Thoughts Exactly

Legal Alien
By Pat Mora

Bi-lingual, Bi-cultural,
able to slip from "How's life?"
to "Me'stan volciendo loca,"
able to sit in a paneled office
drafting memos in smooth English,
able to order in fluent Spanish
at a Mexican restaurant,
American but hyphenated,
viewed by Mexicans as alien,
(their eyes say, "You may speak
Spanish but you're not like me")
an American to Mexicans
a Mexican to Americans
a handy token
sliding back and forth
between the fringes of both worlds
by smiling
by masking the discomfort
of being pre-judged
Bi-laterally.
